Magnetic properties of ultrathin garnet films
offer: UMR8502-ANDTHI-003
End of publication : 18/12/2024 23:59
Magnetic garnets (the archetype being YIG Y3 Fe5 O12) are a family of ferrimagnetic insulators, in which Yttrium and Iron can be substituted. They can be epitaxially grown on single-crystal garnet substrates, using liquid phase epitaxy, sputtering or pulsed laser deposition. Their magnetic damping parameter can be extremely small, which leads to a variety of applications. The thin films (typically some micrometers in thickness) have been intensively studied in the 70’s. Since about 10 years ago, it has become possible to grow ultrathin films (10 nm) with good quality. This opens the way to the control of their magnetic properties by interfacial effects.
Within the frame of a national project (ANR), LPS is undertaking a multi-technique study of the properties of such layers, with the aims of
– evidencing an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), and controlling it;
– studying the dynamics of magnetic textures, like domain walls, under various drives such as magnetic field and electrical current flowing in an adjacent metallic layer.
The samples are provided by the national consortium. The main techniques to be used are magneto-optical microscopy, scanning probe microscopies (AFM, MFM, …), and spin waves spectroscopy using Brillouin light scattering (BLS). LPS has its own clean room where microstructures can be realized. Results will be analyzed using micromagnetic theory, analytically when possible, or numerically (home-made and public codes).
Candidates should have a good knowledge of solid-state physics and of condensed matter magnetism. An additional previous experience in nanomagnetism and spintronics will be appreciated.
